IARC - Genetic and epidemiology aspects of Nasophargngeal Carcinoma in Sarawak
We have been working with IARC, WHO Lyon since 2002. This is an International collaborative research work on Genetic Epidemiology of nasopharyngeal cancer.
Our collaborators from IARC are Dr. Paul Brennan, Dr. James McKay and Ms Valerie Gaborieu. The study began since the publication of our paper citing the Bidayuhs have the highest incidence of nasopharyngeal cancer in the world.
This study commenced in November, 2002 when our findings on nasopharyngeal cancer (NPC) revealed that we have a very high incidence of NPC in the world. These findings were later published as “High Incidence of Nasopharyngeal cancer in the native people of Sarawak, Malaysia” Journal of Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention, 2004 Vol.13 (3) 482-486.
As part of the work involves interviewing the village elders, the picture below (right) shows our team's visit to a village within the most remote areas of Sarawak.
To start off the study, our first collaborator was Dr. Marilys Corbex. Subsequently the team expanded including Dr. Paul Brennan, Dr. James Mckay and Ms Valerie Gaborieu.
