The Department of Radiotherapy, Oncology & Palliative Care (DRO) was established in 1985 and is the only referral cancer care Center in Sarawak (East Malaysia). Since January 1998, we have been working closely with the Sarawak Hospice Society in a joint effort to run the Hospice Care Program. Since January 1998, we have been working seamlessly with the DRO in a joint effort to run the Hospice Care Program to enhance the Palliative Care Services of the Oncology Department in Sarawak.

From its humble beginnings, our Center has grown into a full-fledged Oncology Center capable of delivering high quality treatment incorporating modern technological advances in the field. As recognition for the Center’s commitment in delivering comprehensive cancer care, we have been accredited as an ESMO designated center of Integrated Oncology & Palliative Care in 2009, an honor shared by only a handful of centers in Asia.

The department comprises of 5 In-Patient Wards- a total of 140 beds (FRTU, MRTU, PCW and 2 CAW- Cancer Ambulant Ward) and 7 Out-patient Clinics. Oncology services provided include Radiotherapy and Chemotherapy for all solid tumors, Palliative Care and Hospice care services. The Pediatric and Hemato-Oncology services are handled by separate departments in the hospital. We are able to provide our chemotherapy services through the Day Care and In-patient Chemotherapy. Radiotherapy service comprising of a conventional simulator and a CT simulator, 2 treatment planning systems and 3 Linear accelerators, one of which is equipped with a Multi Leaf Collimator for the delivery of conformal and intensity modulated radiotherapy. 

The clinical team is headed by Senior Consultant Clinical Oncologist, Dr. C.R. Beena Devi along with Dr. Rajiv Choudhary, Dr. Yu Kong Leong, Dr. Voon Pei Jye, Dr. Winnie Ling and 6 medical officers.  Dr. Prem Shanmugam, oncologist from UNIMAS, the local university is also a team member. The physics team comprises of 6 physicists within which Dr. Tang Tieng Swee serves as a consultant, a consultative post specially given by Ministry of Health in place of area of unmet needs and high demand of sub-specialization. Dr. Tang Tieng Swee is also the chairman of the Sarawak Hospice Society.

In the future, we will be opening our satellite center in Kota Samarahan with similar services to cater to the increasing needs of the cancer patients. The facility will provide services that are very similar to our current practice. The facility is located about 20 minutes from our present location.
