2011: The First Asian Congress on Cancer in the Older Patients, 22nd - 23rd January, 2011 at Riverside Majestic Hotel, Kuching is jointly organised by International Society of Geriatric Oncology (SIOG), Sarawak Hospice Society and Malaysian Oncological Society (MOS). This will be the first time this congress is held in Asia with speakers from Europe, USA, United Kingdom, Japan, Korea, Singapore and Malaysia. Various topics on cancer in the older patients, assessment, and treatment of some of the common cancers, hematological cancers and nutrition are discussed at this congress. The main intent is to create awareness amongst the health professionals on the importance of managing this population who often go “unnoticed”, being under treated.

 

2010: Best Poster Award by ESMO Milan, 8-12 October, 2010."Early Detection Program focusing on primary and secondary health care providers achieved major and sustainable reduction of the late stage diagnosis of breast cancer" won the best poster award under the "Prevention and Screening" category of the Milan ESMO Meeting. 2010: The Senologic International Society (Société Internationale de Sénologie) short as S.I.S., has approved Department of Radiotherapy, Oncology & Palliative Care, Sarawak General Hospital as a S.I.S. Honorary Member during its 16th World Congress on S.I.S on 21st Oct, 2010 in Valencia, Spain. Read the letter from its Executive Director Dr. Carlos Garbino.

 

2010: The 10th FNCA workshop in Radiation Oncology , 18th -21st January 2010 at the Riverside Majestic Hotel, Kuching.. This workshop was jointly organised by our department and hosted by Ministry of Health Malaysia and Ministry of Education, Culture, Sport, Science and Technology (MEXT), Japan in cooperation with Nuclear Safety Research Association (NRSA).

2009: International Ethnic Research Initiative award for breast cancer research proposal titled “ Epidemiologic, Clinical and Socio-economic aspects of breast Cancer in the Ethnic Population of Sarawak, Malaysia”

2009: Selected as ESMO Designated Centre of Integrated Oncology and Palliative Care (2010 – 2012).

The highlights of 2009 have been that our department was selected as one of the ESMO Designated center of Integrated Oncology and Palliative care for the period of 2010-2012 and winning the GSK ERI research grant on our study proposal on breast cancer. There are 73 ESMO Designated centers in the world since 2003 and in Asia there are 2 centers in India, 3 in Hong Kong and 1 in Sarawak, Malaysia.

2009: In collaboration with INCTR, the i-path program has been started since August 2009. This would assist us in getting a second opinion in difficult cases.

2009: We are now a Partner profile hospital for INCTR. By being a partner profile hospital our work would be disseminated to other hospitals in low and middle income countries as a model of care.

2009: “Setting up home-based palliative care in countries with limited resources: a model from Sarawak, Malaysia.” In Annals of Oncology 19: 2061-2066. 2008 was selected by UICC Global News Alert, Volume 3, Number 2, February 2009 as a model to palliative care in regions with limited resources.

2007: First Prize for Poster competition at the INCTR meeting, for “Using pain as the Fifth Vital Sign for cancer patients in Sarawak, Malaysia: a hospital study” February 2007.

2006: State QAP Convention.

3rd prize: A study on “Pain assessment tool for pain assessment during in patient stay in the hospital” – A pilot project conducted in the department. The findings presented at QAP Meeting in Mukah, September 2006.
