Paul Calabresi Award

The 11th Annual Meeting of SIOG – International Society of Geriatic Oncology, will be held on 4-5 of November this year in Paris, France. It is during this auspicious occasion that SIOG honors each year a prominent world expert in the field of Geriatric Oncology with the Paul Calabresi award, named after its first president: Dr Paul Calabresi.

Such world recognition had various recipients in the past. For example, Harvey J. Cohen, MD, Duke University School of Medicine, USA (2009), Riccardo Audisio, MD, FRCS - Whiston Hospital, Merseyside, UK (2008) and Prof. Hyman B. Muss, MD, University of Vermont Cancer Center, Burlington, VT, USA (2007), among others.

This year, the Paul Calabresi award is given to someone outside the countries traditionally active in geriatric oncology. This is exceptional because the award had never been given to anyone outside the US or Europe, where aging population had been a norm.

And, this year, its recipient is Dr. Beena Devi CR of Department of Radiotherapy, Oncology and Palliative Care (DRO), Hospital Umum Sarawak, Kuching. This is in recognition of her continuous passion in offering a hope in treating cancer, especially to the elderly group in this country.

Malaysia, as like other countries in Asia, is a fast growing economy. In achieving the multitude of economic bursts and development of infrastructure and human capital, it also has to face with a growing and aging population, although slowly, but surely. Inevitably, this phenomenon would attract the attention of the healthcare providers to put emphasis on geriatrics (the aging population) as economic advancement had also brought along higher standard of health care. The DRO, HUS is a team player in this endeavor to contribute to this segment of national building.
